For El Presidente this time around!
Most of the Dems love this nominee! Senators Harry Reid and Charles Schumer think she’s tops. In fact, she was picked by Harry Reid. Remember back in early July, he urged the President to moderate his choice for the Supreme Court so that the Democrats would be willing to support the nomination, saying that they did not want any more judges on the Supreme Court? Snarling Bob Beckel thinks she’s a great choice too. Perhaps she was even recommended by Chief Justice John Roberts. Who knows?
I do know that The Big Byrd from West Virginia had his hands a-stirrin’ the pudding. I blogged about it on July 13th.
Warned y’all I did! Yes, indeedy. I warned you that Senator Harry Reid and the “Gang of 14″ were plotting to pick the new Supreme Court justice to replace Justice O’Conner. I hope that my prediction is wrong, but look what’s a happening just today according to The Hill: “Bush telephoned Byrd — … yesterday to solicit his views. ‘I’m praising the president for listening, for reaching out,’ Byrd, among the administration’s harshest congressional critics, told The Hill. He said he had received a call earlier from former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.), who is helping Bush select a nominee and get him or her confirmed, and from White House counsel Harriet Myers. Byrd said he forwarded two names to the White House.“
Now we know who the “other of the two names” was! Ms. Harriet Miers! Of course, the first of the two names was his own - Senator Bobby Byrd of West Virginny. El Presidente passed over the Old Byrd - probably thinking he was too old for the job.
The only conservative I have found who is pleased with the president’s pick is Patrick Ruffini. He says “I’m going to state categorically that conservatism is sitting pretty at this hour. That’s because Harry Reid has just been hosed - and he doesn’t even know it. … The Court will almost certainly move to the right as a result of the nomination and confirmation of Harriet Miers.” Oh yes, and that commentator on Fox News likes her too - can’t remember his name right now (Fred Barnes - it came to me). Ruffini also claims that Harriet Miers is conservative, so that makes two who are vouching for her, plus El Presidente.
Kerfuffles’ predictions were wrong, and that is a good thing, for whatever disappointments there be with Ms. Miers, she has to be a better choice than Hillary, John McCain or Senator Robert Byrd, which is who I suspected that Harry Reid had advised the President to choose.
Non-judges Only for the Supreme Court Said Harry Reid and Three of the Supremes! And El Presidente obeyed.
