Mind-bloggling over Harriet Miers!
He’s fighting a war on two fronts; abroad in the Middle East and here in Washington with the Dems. He’s dealing with the ravishes of nature’s fury in the Southland. He was even trying to fix Society Security for future generations. Now there are whiffs of mutiny in the air. The Captain Bligh Bloggers are after his hide. Can’t we just give the guy some slack? Can’t we at least wait until the Senate confirmation hearings are finished to trash him and his new Supreme Court nominee? Can’t we trust him to be President and to make the big decisions? NO - say the Big Bloggers! Why? Because the “Big MSM Pundits” George Will and Bill Crystal and Charles Krauthammer and John Fund say that President Bush picked his nominee without consulting with them first, that’s why!
Kerfuffles agrees with Don Surber’s great post about President George W. Bush and his pick for the Supreme Court, Harriet Miers. Cao’s Blog agrees with us too. After all, according to WaPo’s profile of her HERE, the fact that she has a degree in mathematics indicates to Kerfuffles that she is not your “run of the mill” lady lawyer. She is apt to have an analytical mind which probably would contribute new insight to the Supremes.
In fact, Kerfuffles did a wee bit of research of some brief biographies of the Supremes and was pleasantly surprised to find that Ms. Miers could indeed be a breath of fresh air to that elite brotherhood. Ms. Miers did NOT receive her degrees from Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Oxford, Columbia or Northwestern as have all of the other Supremes, including Rhenquist and O’Connor. She is a true Southerner - not only born and bred, as was Clarence Thomas, but she stayed in Dixie and got her education there too. If nothing else, that should be a clincher! Not one of the Supremes has any evidence of advanced education in the physical sciences. Ms. Miers, with her degree in mathematics, would be a stand-out in that regard.
The career path of Ms. Miers has been quite a different one from that of any of the current justices. She has been an elected president and a co-managing partner of large law firms. She is a successful trial litigator representing big American corporations. She has been involved in both state and local politics in Texas and was elected to the Dallas City Council. She worked as a volunteer on the Texas Lottery Commission when it was mired in scandal and was instrumental in its cleanup. She has worked inside the White House as an influential confident of an American President. These experiences are quite at variance with those of the current appointed Supremes and bode well for her being an enrichment to them.
BelderBlog has made a search for her records, posted snippets, and commented upon them (others here), sarcastically concluding:
After all, Harriet Miers is just a “third-rate lawyer” from “an undistinguished law firm” who’s never handled any big cases, hasn’t got any appellate experience to speak of, and has never, ever done anything involving really hard or important stuff like constitutional law. She’s just an unqualified crony. Fetches Dubya’s coffee. There’s just nothing in her record, no meaningful achievements, to distinguish her from a million other lawyers in the country.
Everyone says so. I read it today in the Washington Post! So it must be true, huh?
Chris Cillizza at “The Fix” is awaiting condemnation from Republican senators. Is it forthcoming? If so, he suspects it could come from Senator Sam Brownback who is a possible presidential candidate and a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Brownback recently complained: “A lot of us wanted to see somebody that was a well-formed jurist so that they had a track record of what they would do in cases coming in front of the court. Harriet Miers doesn’t have that track record and doesn’t seem to be well-formed in her judicial philosophy, having never been on the bench.” Kerfuffles advises not to bet big bucks on any Republicans voting against the President’s choice, especially Brownback.
Chris is saying in “RNC Tries to Rally Bloggers Behind Miers” that Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman held a conference call today with some conservative bloggers attempting to garner blog support for Harriet Miers. Blogger Patrick Ruffini organized the event as he is now directing online operations for the RNC. Mehlman told the pro-Republicans that Harriet Mier would not hang about wanting “to curry favor with the Georgetown cocktail set.” Cool! Is that what David Souter does?
