Kiss A Pig ~
if you have bread, fruit and veggies to eat. What’s so good about a pig?
The religion of Islam forbade the consumption of pig flesh (pork and ham and bacon), therefore people stopped raising and keeping swine, as they had formerly done during the Roman period. Throughout the Islamic empire, hog farming gave way to the keeping of more goats and sheep instead. However, this drastic change had an unfortunate effect upon the environment, as pigs do not destroy the forests where they live, but sheep and goats do. With the raising of more sheep and goats, landscapes, especially in North Africa, were soon stripped of most of the native trees. What had once been forests in the pre-Islamic world were turned into bare hills with only scrubby brush surviving. Without the trees to anchor and hold the soil, much was eroded from the hills and washed into the ocean, and the farmland became deficient for the raising of crops, according to “Medieval Islamic Food”.
